Obama’s Dangerous Message
We have all heard the Obama “Roanoke Rant” rant by now.
“If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen”
After hearing that, my first reaction was “did he really just say that?”. I then I realized that the President went off script (and teleprompter). When he ad libs like this he is prone to giving us clues into his true core ideology. In an effort to save him the left has been hitting the airwaves trying to convince people the “that” he was referring to was government infrastructure. I am not so sure.
This is another in a long line of ill-timed “truths” that give us insight into the mind of Obama. Remember the statement “you need to spread the wealth around” when speaking to Joe the Plumber? Or, what about his remarks that “the private sector is doing just fine”?
Welcome to Obama’s world. It is a world where government can do no wrong and the private sector can do no right. It is a false reality where government can, and should exist, without the free market. It is a place where capitalism is a necessary evil, and not the driving force for prosperity. Maybe someone should remind him that the federal government would not exist if it were not for the states granting it power, and, government infrastructure such as roads and bridges would not exist if not for the tax revenues generated by the private sector.
Many of us can look back at our childhood and remember certain speeches given to us by our elected leaders. Some of these speeches have come to define us as Americans. Some of these speeches have defined the time. Will our children and grandchildren look back and remember this speech from our 44th President? I sure hope not.
In 1996, I decided to leave the high tax, high regulation state of New York and move to business friendly Florida. Since opening my businesses, like many business owners, I have worked tirelessly to make an impact on my community and my finances while creating jobs. It wasn’t until last week that I realized that I never built it, that somebody else made that happen.
This is a dangerous message that Obama is sending to our youth. It is a message that says you are not in control of your own destiny and that you cannot succeed without government. It is a message that says your hard work will not be rewarded. This type of rhetoric should be resoundingly rejected by the American people. There are too many people in this nation that think that the governments job is to take care of them. In order to remain the greatest republic this world has ever known we need more entrepreneurs, not less.
Obama is sending a dangerous, wrong message. In November, we need to send ours.

Seriously? Just continue to take quotes out of context when Obama was talking about the roads and bridges that the government (aka citizens) built to set the stage for businesses to grow. Short message, you need society for businesses to work, and taxes are the fee you pay for society. You are either disingenuous or ignorant, you choose.

I see that most of the comments are on the conservative side. But remember that it is not just Obama in the next election. It MUST be every federal and state legislator that is up for re-election. We MUST remove ALL of them. EVERY ONE that has served in office. And if the new crop doesn’t do any better, we replace them, and then again and again until we get some persons in office that do the will of the people.
We only need to look at the history of democracies to know that they all end in dictatorship. Which in turn leads to armed revolution. Now I don’t want my children and/or grandchildre to have to go through that. The only recourse we have is to have a POLITICAL REVOLUTION to forstall the armed one.
I hope the the PEOPLE of the United States will realize the situation we are in, and a majority will be independent and intelligent enough to act at the polls.

You may want that but most of us prefer the capital system where hard work pays off not without demonizing us. He really has failed and it is time for us to put someone in place who will get the financials of this country fixed and get us to a place where we can breathe a bit better knowing our kids and grands and great grands won’t have this hugh debt on their shoulders. Don’t you know that all politician talk junk but we just have to get one that will keep the country on it’s feet so the citizens will be able to work, keep their family’s in relative comfort and retire with some dignity. When people start arresting your kid for no reason and refuse to let him go and have no cause or they start giving you tickets for just about everything and telling you you cannot do things that you enjoy and take away all your money which you worked hard for just to spread it around to those that sit on their butts all day, will you feel the same way? Do me a favor and study the truth about the first thanksgiving. It was pure famine because there was no motivation for people to work hard and prosper. They saw now whats in it for me to motivate them to work hard and therefore have extra to share. If everyone just sits by and waits for others to do the work, no one will have anything my friend. The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money. Tell me one government entity that can actually build any infrastructure. It has all been built by private companies. Many of them small businesses. The only thing the government does is require the small business to pay prevailing wages to further protect union bosses. In reference to Bob’s comment about taking the statement out of context… If you don’t own a business you didn’t build the infrastructure either, which makes the remark based on his interpretation a meaningless bit of jabber. Therefore claiming that this refers only to infrastructure and not to the accomplishment of building a business is ridiculous. And the truth of the matter is that it is small businesses that did build the infrastructure by creating jobs and paying taxes on their productive ventures.
Obama didn’t build the infrastructure either. But under his watch we are currently see it go into such grave decline that we get an “F” or a “D” in most categories as most independent engineering consultants determine those rankings.
The business people that Obama are refering to DID CONTRIBUTE to the building of the roads, bridges and infastructure, in fact the business owners contributed more in taxes than non-business owning citizens, so YES the business owners did build the roads and bridges that Obama is saying they did not build, as well as the hard work and long hours to build their own business.
Let’s not forget that the roads were paid for with taxes taken from workers and businesses. Those businesses that paid the workers that paid the taxes were not conceived, created, and developed by the government. Government of, by, and for the people will not replace the people. What is the difference from a government that takes the fruits of the people to bring power unto itself any different than the King’s power that our forefathers came here to escape?

Read any of his writing when in college and you will find numerous instances of childlike errors of not matching the noun with the verb. In this case, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that” seems to me that “you didn’t build that’ would refer to the antecedent word ‘business’.

The government hasn’t built anything. Up to this point their sole contribution has been to fund projects and ideas INDIVIDUALS came up with and made work; often in spite of government’s interferrence.

How many successful business owners benefitted from public schools, government grants for college and government guaranteed student loans? Does it make any sense now that our schools are drastically under-funded at a time when businesses are making record profits. No it doesn’t. Hey, thanks for the feedback. Using the entire quote won’t matter. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, Obama shifted gears when talking about business people. Government does not build anything on its own. It needs tax revenues. So, bridges, roads, and, yes, salaries for teachers are funded from the taxpayer. It is a bad message that he is sending to our youth. Why doesn’t he ever highlight the over $300 billion given by individuals and corporation to charity every year? Because it doesn’t fit his narrative of government is the only solution.
I don’t know what gifts to charities have to do with any of it. Especially, since most of the “charities” are wealthy churches, ivy league colleges and other ego-driven donations. Donating money to one’s alma matter to erect a new building in the donor’s name, for instance, doesn’t get new textbooks to kids in the first grade. Someone paid for that donor to get schoolbooks as they went through the educational system. People today also need to look after the next generation. But that’s only if we expect America to remain a prosperous, first world country. Or if we care.
The thing is, America isn’t going to prosper with Marxist Obama at the helm, you can see that now, with unemployment over 8% for almost four years, over $5 trillion more debt, the deficit over three times higher than when Bush left office. How can liberals trust him the next four years with the same socialist policies he’s used the first four years? America’s economy is much worse off now than it was when President Bush left office.
The economy is not worse than it was when Bush was in office. Where did you get that? It is an outright lie. Do you own investments? Have you been checking your balances over the past few years? Admittedly our debt has increased, but how do you stabilize the economy without spending money? How do you balance a budget when we’re taking in fewer tax dollars than what we must spend in obligations (interest on the debt and entitlements)? No Democrat OR Republican has a solution to that problem. And the main reason that the deficit has gone up is because Obama put the costs of Bush’s wars in the budget rather than trying to hide those costs ‘off the books’. Your anger is understood but it is misplaced. These issues have been many years in the making and nobody we elect has a suitable answer to them.
I would also suggest that you leave it to the reader to decide how much of the quote is relevant and what parts of it are not. The small piece of it included in your article completely changes meaning of Obama’s words. It’s time we stop doing that to each other. I am a person with little education in business and know that all the so called major corporations are holding on to their profits because Obama has put fear in them with his budgets and massive social agrenda’s. You should also know that businesses never pay taxes. They pass them on to the consumer which is what you are complaining about. I know this whole thing sounds so unfair. But, there is this balancing point for business and the consomer. And the liberal agenda of tax and spend makes an imbalance for the situation. There is no substitution for the free market. Besides, Reagan proved that less taxes brought more productivity and more tax revenue.

We will just ask the Fed to print us some more bills, we will then borrow them from the Fed and pay them 3% interest, and that is what we will use to “balance the budget for those rednecks and there” and still have huge dinners and vacations where I am sure Brad, George, Angelina and whoever George is banging at the time” Life for us and our friends will simply get so much better.

You have a basic misunderstanding on from where the federal government derives its power. It specifically does not derive its authority from the states but rather from the people. That’s why the Constitution beings, “We the people … ” to show that it gets its authority independently of the states. Under the old articles of confederation, the federal government did draw its authority from the states. George Washington, James Madison and others saw that was a miserable failure and went about creating a new government in which the national government would not depend on the states for its power or authority.
He wasn’t saying that the federal government gets its power from the states, he was saying that the mentioned things would not have been possible without permission from the sovereign states where the projects took place.
The president is right when he says lots of people work hard and lots of people are smart. What he doesn’t understand (and shouldn’t be expected to since he has zero private sector experience) is the risk taken that separates entrepreneurs from everyone else. The risk of losing everything is always right around the corner for me. One of my employees can run over someone in the company truck. Our sign can fall off the wall and hit someone. I have lost sleep knowing if I didn’t collect an invoice the next day I couldn’t make payroll for my 80 employees. Regarding roads, they would be roads to nowhere without private enterprise. The president is an absolute bad joke played on the country by the political correctness crowd.

Do you realize the difference between giving (gifts) and taking (taxes)?
Other people being smart and working hard are wonderful things but do they diminish my efforts?

Do roads and bridges obligate me in some way? I thought current taxes and tolls covered it.

As a former business owner I find this repugnant. The quote does not reveal the tone of voice, gestures or facial expressions. When they are added in, the thing has a very Monty Python/ Eric Idle “…wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean, know what I mean…” feeling.

Once I review – and I always do – everything else I KNOW Obama has said, written, chosen, and done, Obama means that the builder/founder of the business did not build his/her business.
Common sense tells me that if you want to be that petty, then my mother helped me build the busness because she changed brought me up; my doctor helped me because he/she took her of my health, etcetera.
Obama means that you did not build that business and that is that. Listen to Elizabeth Warren say the same thing – Obama simply expanded on it.

I completely agree! I work in the company that my father built over the past 23 years. He did not take government aid, subsidies, or hand-outs of any kind to create what currently employees over 25 people and contributes to our community. He built this company the old fashioned way: being conservative, not going into massive debt, and growing only as fast as his bank account would allow. I’m very proud to be a part of this company, this community, and this nation. The hard work of people like my father is what our government should be rewarding instead of penalizing. The message seems to be, “Don’t work hard and make a better life for youself, your family, and your community because if you become wealthy your are selfish and evil which in result gives the federal government the right to take what you’ve earned and give it to those who don’t wish to challenge themselves to succeed.” Government handouts need to be reigned in, the debt needs to be eliminated, and we need to be proud of hard working, successful Americans. I look forward to going a different direction in November.
